Week 1: Meet Artyum...

Today was Artyum's 7th birthday and he had the opportunity to celebrate his birthday at camp. It was no ordinary birthday. It was not marked in the traditional sense of cakes, parties and gifts, instead Artyum was rescued today!

You see, Artyum is an orphan. He was orphaned some time ago and had been living in the Donetsk region of Ukraine with some strangers who took him in. For reasons still unknown, these strangers, packed Artyum up with a small bag and bought him a one way bus ticket to Kiev. With little regard for his life or safety, he was placed on the bus and shipped 14 hours away by himself. After arriving in the area, Artyum, having no where to go, began roaming from village to village.

After a phone call from local villages nearby, Social Services in Ivankiv went to the village this morning, found Artyum and brought him to our camp. Artyum will stay with us through August 1st, while Social Services tries to determine who and where his parents are, how best to deal with him, where to place him (orphanage or foster family, etc.).

So, today, on his 7th birthday, Artyum was rescued and got to hear a story about Jesus!
